Co.Labs is the software development focused section of the website, Fast Company. The section focuses on all aspects, from the designing aspect to the coding creation. Co.Labs is a place for all individuals involved in development to learn and share. Co.Labs, which debuted last month, is placing its mark early in the industry with their first ever accelerator, the Co.Labs + Target accelerator.
The Co.Labs accelerator, in partnership with Target, has sent out a call for all mobile developers to create a mobile application that revolutionizes the shopping experience for Target retail customers. Target is helping out by providing their API to those interested in Target mobile innovation.
Target has outlined four key areas of interest and the winning apps should address one or more of these:
- Social: Enabling customers to interact with one another, or Target
- Education: Helping students, teachers, and schools be more successful, and improving the community
- In-store: Extending and improving the experience within the store, or until the next visit
- Personalization: Catering to the unique tastes and needs of each individual customer- Fast Company Co.Labs
Developers looking to get involved have a lot of inspiration on the market already. One piece of inspiration to note is the Apple Store mobile application that has been out there for about a year now.
All from your iOS device, you are able to interact with the app immediately when entering an Apple retail store by joining the Genius Bar line queue to be waited on. You can also view store workshops, events, and even use EasyPay to make purchases in a snap – in store. The app has successfully, in the end, joined the online and retail aspects of Apple while helping employees make their job easier with customer management.
Back to the accelerator, the grand prize is $75,000. Seven finalists are also chosen and awarded $10,000 each. Submissions end on April 30th, and the finalists are announced May 13th. Once the finalists work with Target to tweak the product until the end of May, the finalists present their products in June and the grand prize winner is announced July 1st.

It’s important to note that once the product wins, Target will use your app and own control of it. Exceptions are made and intellectual property can be kept by the creator in exchange for revocation of prize money.
